#190 - POLAND - redka

A great colorful card from redka who lives in Poznan itself.
Poznań is one of the oldest and largest cities in Poland. It is the historical capital of the Wielkopolska Region, where the Polish State was born 1000 years ago. The origins of the city date back to the 9th century, when a castle - town, the seat of one of the ruling Duke's, was established in Ostrów Tumski on the right bank of the Warta River in the flood basin of the Warta and Cybina Rivers. Soon it was surrounded by the beginnings of a municipal settlement.

Poznań (...) with its tall houses and spacious market square has charm aplenty". These were the words Rev. Benedykt Chmielowski used over 250 years ago to describe the capital of Wielkopolska in the oldest Polish encyclopaedia. And though today there are taller buildings and larger open spaces in the city, the Old Market Square remains the source of great pride for Poznanians and an object of admiration for numerous visitors.
Marked out in 1253, when the city of Poznań was chartered, the market square has been the centre of community life for centuries. It was in the town hall that the city councils took decisions about local affairs. And it was in the market square that the most prominent citizens lived and trade deals were negotiated to bring economic prosperity to the city. http://www.poznan.pl
